Bridging old instruments into a new backbone
Actisense interfaces earn their keep on boats where older NMEA 0183 instruments, such as a legacy autopilot or wind sensor, need to talk to a modern NMEA 2000 network built around a new plotter. A basic gateway converts data in both directions, so an old depth sounder can still feed a new chartplotter without replacing it, and a new GPS position can reach an ageing autopilot.
Baud rate matters more than people expect: NMEA 0183 devices are not all set to the same speed, and AIS receivers in particular often run at a higher baud rate than instruments, so check the gateway supports multiple 0183 ports if you are combining several older devices. Galvanic isolators and multiplexers solve a related but different problem, keeping data flowing cleanly when several 0183 talkers are wired to one network rather than causing a data collision.
