Matching a transducer to your hull and sounder
Choosing an Airmar transducer starts with the hull, not the sounder. Transom-mount transducers suit most planing hulls and are the easiest to fit without hauling out, thru-hull transducers need a hole below the waterline and a fairing block matched to the hull's deadrise angle, and in-hull transducers shoot through solid GRP where owners prefer not to put a hole in the hull, at some cost to signal clarity in aerated water.
The connector on the transducer also has to match your specific sounder brand and model, since Garmin, Raymarine, Simrad, B&G, Lowrance and Furuno each use different plugs and, in some cases, different internal wiring even for a similar-looking transducer. CHIRP transducers need a CHIRP-capable sounder to make use of the wider frequency sweep; fitted to an older, non-CHIRP unit they will still work, but only at a single traditional frequency.
