What an autopilot head actually controls

A B&G autopilot controller, the keypad or touchscreen head, does not steer the boat on its own; it sends commands over the network to a course computer, which drives the actual rudder or wheel motor. That distinction matters when troubleshooting: a fault in steering response usually sits with the drive unit or rudder reference, while a fault in the menu, mode selection or display sits with the head itself.

Multiple heads can usually be fitted around a boat, at the helm and below decks for example, all talking to the same course computer over NMEA 2000, which is useful on a sailing boat where the primary steering position moves between cockpit and chart table. Where a boat already runs B&G Triton or Zeus instruments, the autopilot head typically shares the same network and can display some instrument data alongside its own steering functions.

Check the connector and network protocol of your existing course computer before choosing a replacement head, since older SailSteer-era hardware is not always a direct swap for a current NMEA 2000 controller.
