Depth sensing on a B&G instrument system
Depth accuracy depends more on transducer type and fitting than on the display reading it. Thru-hull transducers give the cleanest, most consistent readings and suit a permanent installation, transom-mount units are the simpler retrofit for smaller boats without haul-out access, and in-hull transducers, glued to the inside of a solid hull, avoid any penetration at all but only work reliably through certain hull materials and thicknesses.
Deadrise angle at the mounting point matters as much as the type: a steeply angled hull needs a transducer designed or shimmed for that angle, or readings will be inconsistent at speed. Frequency affects both range and detail, lower frequencies reach deeper water while higher frequencies give sharper detail in shallower depths, which is why some transducers offer dual or multiple frequencies rather than a single fixed one.
