Why an external GPS antenna is worth fitting

Most chartplotters and instrument displays include an internal GPS receiver, but a masthead or external antenna almost always gives a faster, more stable fix, since it has a clear view of the sky rather than being shaded by a cabin roof, rig or nearby superstructure. That matters most at low speed or at anchor, where a weak internal signal can show the boat drifting on the chart even when it is not actually moving.

Modern external antennas are GNSS rather than GPS-only, meaning they can track GLONASS and Galileo satellites alongside GPS, which improves fix quality and speeds up cold starts, particularly in marinas or under bridges where satellite visibility is already reduced. Connection method varies: some antennas feed position over NMEA 2000 as a standalone network device, while others use a proprietary cable specific to a particular display, so check which your chartplotter or instrument system expects before ordering.
