What tends to fail and why
Displays are usually the first thing to show its age: backlighting dims, seals around the bezel let in moisture, and buttons or touch response get less reliable well before the electronics inside actually give up. Masthead units suffer differently, since wind vanes and cups take direct weather and salt exposure and are a wear item on any rig, not a fault as such.
Connector type is the detail to get right before ordering a spare. Older Triton and Hercules-era gear used SimNet, while current instruments run on NMEA 2000 with a standard drop cable, so a straight swap sometimes needs an adaptor cable to bridge the two rather than a direct plug-in replacement.
If a display has failed but the rest of the network is reading correctly, that usually points to the unit itself rather than the backbone, which narrows down what actually needs replacing before you spend on a full instrument refit.
