Bridging NMEA 0183 into a 2000 network

NMEA 0183 is the older serial standard used by many legacy instruments and some AIS and radio equipment, wired point to point on separate output and input pairs rather than the shared backbone used by NMEA 2000. It is still common on boats with an older instrument suite, or where one piece of equipment, such as an AIS receiver, has never been updated to a 2000-only interface.

Mixing 0183 and 2000 devices on the same boat usually means adding a converter or multiplexer that translates sentences between the two formats, since they are not electrically or logically compatible without one. Baud rate matters too: some 0183 devices, such as AIS units, transmit at a higher rate than standard instrument data, so check that any converter or gateway supports the correct rate for each device before wiring it in. Ask us if you are unsure how your existing instruments are wired.
