Pairing a sonar module with a transducer
A black-box sonar module takes the electronics out of the display and puts them in a separate unit wired to the transducer, which frees up space behind the screen and, on some models, allows higher sonar power than a display with sonar built in. Performance still depends on the transducer, not just the module, so matching transducer type, CHIRP frequency range and mounting style, through-hull, transom or in-hull, to your hull material and typical depth matters as much as the choice of module.
B&G sonar modules connect into the SimNet-based NMEA 2000 backbone shared with Triton and Zeus displays, so sonar imagery can be shown on any compatible screen on the network rather than needing a dedicated display. If you are adding a module to an existing sailing instrument system, check the transducer connector and cable type match the module before ordering, since transducer connectors are not standardised across brands.
