Placing speakers where they'll actually be heard
Sound carries poorly across a cockpit under sail, with wind noise and spray masking anything that is not angled towards the crew, so speaker position matters as much as speaker quality. A pair mounted low in the cockpit coaming projects sound differently to a pair on a pushpit-mounted pod bracket aimed forward, and on a boat where the helm sits well aft of the companionway, angling speakers towards the person actually steering usually matters more than symmetry.
Speakers are also increasingly used for more than music, since some instrument systems can route audible alarms, such as a depth or autopilot alert, through the boat's speakers rather than a separate buzzer; if that is part of the plan, check the head unit or instrument system supports routing alarms to the same speaker circuit before assuming it happens automatically. As with any marine speaker, match the impedance to the amplifier channel and keep cable runs as short as practical to minimise signal loss in an exposed cockpit.
