Paddlewheel versus through-hull speed sensors
A paddlewheel sensor sits in a through-hull fitting and measures speed directly from a small rotating wheel in the water flow, which is simple to fit and service but can foul with weed or growth on a boat left in the water for long periods. Some B&G speed sensors instead work alongside a masthead unit or GPS input to give true wind and boat speed together, which matters for sailors who rely on accurate performance data rather than just a speed-over-ground figure from a plotter.
Fitting a through-hull sensor means choosing the right hull thickness range for the fitting and sealing it correctly, since a poor seal is one of the more common causes of a slow leak discovered too late. Speed data feeds into the wider instrument network over NMEA 2000 or SeaTalkng, so check which protocol the rest of your system uses before ordering a display or sensor to add to an existing set-up.
