Wired or wireless wind sensors
Wind instruments split mainly on whether the sensor is wired or wireless, and that choice affects the whole rig rather than just the masthead unit. A wired sensor needs a cable run down the mast, straightforward on a new build or a mast already being pulled, but awkward to retrofit without unstepping. A wireless sensor removes that cable run entirely, transmitting to a receiver near the mast base, at the cost of a battery or solar cell aloft needing occasional attention.
However the sensor connects, alignment at the masthead matters more than most owners expect: a wind vane fitted even slightly off centreline introduces a consistent offset into every apparent wind reading, which then feeds through to any calculated true wind figures shown on the display. B&G wind sensors network over NMEA 2000, so once fitted they share data with the rest of a B&G or wider NMEA 2000 instrument system without separate wiring to each display.
