Digital switching on a Garmin network
EmpirBus digital switching modules take the place of a conventional fuse panel and dedicated switches, distributing power to circuits via output modules controlled over a data network rather than individual wired runs back to a central panel. Paired with a Garmin MFD, those circuits can be switched, dimmed or grouped directly from the chart display, alongside the usual navigation and sonar screens, rather than needing a separate control panel at the helm.
Custom logic is where EmpirBus goes beyond a standard switch panel: circuits can be set to respond to conditions elsewhere on the network, such as automatically switching on navigation lights at dusk or interlocking a windlass circuit with the anchor being stowed.
Retrofitting EmpirBus to an existing Garmin NMEA 2000 network is more involved than adding a typical instrument, since it usually means replanning the DC distribution rather than simply adding a device to the backbone; it is worth talking it through before committing to a layout.
