Sourcing the right sensor replacement
Depth, speed and wind sensors on Garmin instrument systems are usually NMEA 2000 devices on current installations, which makes replacing a faulty unit largely a case of matching the connector and unplugging the old sensor from the drop cable, but older boats may still carry proprietary Garmin wiring that needs a different spare entirely. Check which generation of instrument network is fitted before ordering.
A paddlewheel speed sensor that reads erratically is often fouled with growth rather than faulty, so it is worth cleaning and checking for free movement before assuming a replacement is needed.
