Building a Garmin NMEA 2000 backbone
A NMEA 2000 network is built from a backbone cable run with T-connectors at intervals, each feeding a short drop cable to an individual device such as a display, engine interface or sensor. Garmin's own cabling is physically and electrically standard NMEA 2000, so it mixes freely with other manufacturers' cable and devices on the same backbone without adaptors.
The network needs a terminator at each physical end of the backbone, never in the middle, and a single power feed sized to the total current draw of every device attached. Adding several power-hungry devices to a network designed for a smaller system is a common cause of erratic readings or dropouts.
Drop cable length is limited per NMEA 2000 specification, and total backbone length has its own limit depending on cable gauge, so a large boat with many stations may need a heavier-gauge backbone rather than standard drop cable run end to end. If you are extending an existing network, it is worth checking how much spare capacity the current power feed actually has.
