How GPS anchoring trolling motors work
Garmin's smart trolling motors hold position using GPS rather than a mechanical anchor, which works well in open water but is less precise in tight, current-heavy or shallow areas where satellite accuracy alone cannot substitute for a real anchor point. Pairing the motor to a compatible Garmin chartplotter unlocks features such as following a saved track or steering directly from the chart display, so check your MFD's software supports the trolling motor before buying one expecting full integration.
Foot pedal and remote control are usually sold separately from the motor itself, so factor in which control method suits how you fish before assuming one is included. Battery draw is significant under load, so the motor's power needs matching to a bank sized for a full day's use rather than a single short outing.
