Laying out a helm pod
A pod is really a panel-cutting decision as much as a mounting one, so start by listing every instrument that needs to sit at the helm: chartplotter, VHF, engine gauges and autopilot control head all take up panel space and cable run at the same time. MarinePod configurations are built around specific display cutout sizes, so measure the display first rather than choosing a pod size and hoping it fits.
Angling the pod towards the helmsman rather than square to the console usually does more for visibility in bright sun than screen brightness alone. Leave room behind the panel for connectors and strain relief on cables, particularly power and NMEA 2000 drops, since a pod with no depth behind it makes routine servicing far harder than it needs to be.
Binnacle-mounted pods suit open helms and flybridges, while flush console pods work better where the pod needs to blend into an existing dashboard.
