Matching a drive unit to your steering
The drive unit has to suit the boat's existing steering type. A hydraulic pump taps into an existing hydraulic helm and is sized to the ram's displacement, while a mechanical or rotary drive connects directly into cable steering and needs enough torque for the boat's rudder loading. Getting the drive undersized for the boat shows up as sluggish course corrections or the pilot struggling to hold heading in a following sea.
A drive unit on its own does nothing without a course computer and compass or rudder reference feeding it, and on a Lowrance-networked boat these communicate over NMEA 2000 alongside the HDS display, so heading and steering data can be shown and adjusted from the plotter. Confirm your existing steering system's hydraulic ram size or cable diameter before ordering, since drives are not universal across boat sizes.
