Why an external GPS antenna helps
A built-in GPS receiver on a chartplotter works well in most open helm positions, but an external antenna earns its keep where the internal aerial has a poor view of the sky, such as a flybridge helm shaded by a hardtop, a lower helm inside an enclosed wheelhouse, or a hull with significant metal or carbon content that interferes with reception. An external antenna also gives a faster initial fix and generally more consistent tracking at speed, which matters for anyone relying on accurate speed-over-ground and course data.
Mounting position should be as high and as clear of overhead obstructions as practical, away from radar scanners and other transmitting antennas that can cause interference. Cable run length affects signal quality, so avoid unnecessary coiling of excess cable and check the connector type matches the plotter's GPS antenna port before ordering, since Lowrance has used more than one connector style across its range.
