Understanding Navico's Ethernet network
Navico's Ethernet network, shared across Lowrance, Simrad and B&G displays, uses its own locking connector rather than a standard RJ45 plug, so a cable bought for a home network or a different brand's marine Ethernet will not fit without an adapter. It carries the high-bandwidth data a NMEA 2000 backbone cannot handle: radar returns, chart imagery and structure or livesight-style sonar.
A basic single-display setup may not need Ethernet at all if it is only reading depth, GPS and wind over NMEA 2000, but adding radar, a second display or high-resolution sonar usually means bringing an Ethernet expander or hub into the network to provide enough ports. Cable length and the number of devices on the network both affect signal quality, so keep runs as direct as practical and avoid unnecessary joins.
