Bridging NMEA 0183 into a modern setup
NMEA 0183 is the older serial standard many Lowrance units and third party instruments still use for GPS, AIS or autopilot data, and it wires point to point on a simple two or four wire connection rather than the shared backbone that NMEA 2000 uses. That makes it straightforward to wire but limited in how many devices can talk on one line at once.
Where a boat mixes older 0183 equipment with a newer NMEA 2000 network, a converter or multiplexer is usually needed to translate between the two, since they aren't directly compatible without one. Getting the baud rate and wiring polarity right on the 0183 side is a common source of problems, more often than the equipment itself being faulty.
If you're planning to keep older instruments alongside a new chartplotter, it's worth checking which data each device sends and receives before wiring them together.
