Laying out a Lowrance NMEA 2000 network
An NMEA 2000 network is built around a single powered backbone cable, with individual devices joining via short drop cables through a T connector rather than being wired directly into the trunk line. Every backbone needs a terminator at each end and a single power tap partway along; missing either of these is one of the most common reasons a newly wired network shows devices as connected but not communicating properly.
Lowrance's NMEA 2000 range covers the backbone cable, T connectors, drop cables and power cables needed to extend or build a network from scratch, and the parts are largely interchangeable with other manufacturers' NMEA 2000 certified components, since the standard is shared across brands rather than proprietary to one. When extending an existing network rather than starting fresh, check the total backbone length and device count against what the network can support, since very long or heavily loaded networks sometimes need an additional power injection point partway along the run.
