Why add a separate sonar module

Lowrance's black box sonar modules exist for anglers who want more processing power and channel capacity than a chartplotter's built-in sonar provides, typically to run CHIRP, DownScan and SideScan imaging simultaneously, or to add StructureScan detail without slowing the display's chart redraw. The module does the sonar processing while the chartplotter simply displays the result, so pairing a capable module with a low-spec transducer wastes most of what the module can do.

Networking runs over Ethernet back to a compatible HDS or Elite display rather than the NMEA 2000 backbone carrying other boat data, so it is worth checking your display supports the module's Ethernet protocol and has a free port before buying, particularly on older units with limited networking capability.

Transducer choice needs matching to the module's supported frequencies and imaging modes just as carefully as the module is matched to the display, since a mismatch at either end of the chain limits what actually reaches the screen.
