Fitting marine speakers that will last

Marine speakers need to match the amplifier or stereo driving them as much as they need to survive the environment. Most marine head units are rated for a 4 ohm load per channel, and wiring two speakers to one channel changes that load, so it is worth checking total impedance against what the amp is rated for rather than assuming any speaker will simply work. Flush-mount speakers need clearance behind the panel for the speaker basket, which is often deeper than the cutout suggests, so check mounting depth before cutting into a cockpit locker lid or coaming.

Where there is no cavity to flush-mount into, surface-mount pods are the practical alternative, though they add more visible bulk. Cable gauge matters over longer cockpit runs, since a thin speaker cable run any distance can lose enough signal to affect volume and clarity at the far end of a large cockpit. Position speakers clear of any spot where water regularly pools; even fully marine-rated units are built to resist spray and immersion, not sit permanently wet.
