Building a resilient navigation system
Most navigation failures come down to a single point of failure rather than a faulty unit. A handheld GPS kept as backup, wired independently of the main panel, will get you home if the primary chartplotter or its power supply fails. When planning a new helm, decide early whether you are building around one multifunction display or splitting navigation, radar and sonar across separate units tied together over NMEA 2000 or a manufacturer's own Ethernet backbone; this affects cabling, screen count and how depth, wind and AIS data get shared.
GPS antenna position matters more than most owners expect. Keep it clear of the radar scanner's beam path and away from large metal structures that can cause multipath errors, and remember that an external antenna will usually outperform a built-in receiver on a flybridge or enclosed helm.
