Fitting waterproof power outlets at the helm
Panel-mounted outlets need a clean, flat surface and enough depth behind it for the housing and cable gland, so it is worth checking the cutout diameter and mounting depth against the space available before cutting into a helm panel or coaming. IPX and IP-rated housings keep spray out of the socket when not in use, but the rating only holds with the cover correctly seated, and a socket left open to weather with a device plugged in is a common point of corrosion.
USB outlets vary in output current, and a fast-charging phone or tablet may need a higher-amperage port than a basic USB-A socket delivers, so it is worth matching the outlet's rated output to the devices you actually intend to charge.
AC outlets need feeding from a properly fused circuit off an inverter or shore supply, wired to marine cable gauge rather than domestic flex, and should never be wired directly to a 12V supply regardless of how similar the socket looks.
