Matching a USB outlet to what you're charging
Not every USB outlet delivers the same charging speed, and matching the outlet to the device avoids a slow-charging phone or a tablet that will not charge at all. USB-C PD outlets negotiate voltage and current with the connected device, so a laptop or larger tablet drawing up to 60W will only charge properly from a PD-capable outlet, while a phone will draw whatever lower rate it needs from the same socket. A basic USB-A port, by contrast, delivers a fixed lower current that is fine for a phone but will not fast-charge larger devices.
Fitting is straightforward, but panel cutout size and the depth needed behind the mounting surface vary between models, so check both before cutting into a helm or cockpit moulding rather than after. As with any DC accessory, wire the outlet back to a properly fused feed on the distribution board rather than tapping an existing circuit, and choose cable gauge for the run length involved, since voltage drop over a long thin cable can leave a charger unable to deliver its rated output even when correctly wired.
