Sizing a shore power connection
Getting shore power right starts with matching the inlet's rated current to the boat's actual load, not the marina pedestal's maximum. A 16A single-phase inlet suits most leisure boats with a battery charger, water heater and a few sockets; boats with air conditioning, an inverter charger or a workshop-style load may need a 32A supply, and it is worth checking the boat's main breaker rating before choosing.
Cordset length and cable gauge matter together. A long run on an undersized cable drops voltage before it reaches the charger, which can show up as slow charging rather than an obvious fault. Ratio's splitters and distribution units let a single pedestal feed more than one circuit safely, but each downstream circuit still needs its own breaker or fuse rather than sharing protection.
An RCD or ELCI upstream of the shore power inlet is standard practice on a boat, protecting against the leakage currents that saltwater and damp connections make more likely than on a house circuit.
