Receive-only AIS: what you get and don't
A receive-only AIS unit shows other vessels transmitting AIS on your chartplotter but does not transmit your own boat's position to them, the key difference from a Class B transceiver and the reason it is specified more simply. Because it does not transmit, a receive-only unit does not need an MMSI programmed into it or a DSC-capable VHF link, which simplifies installation compared with a transceiver.
It still needs a VHF-band antenna, either shared with your VHF radio through a splitter or a dedicated AIS aerial, and a data connection, typically NMEA 2000 or 0183, into your chartplotter to display targets. For sailors or slower vessels mainly wanting situational awareness of shipping traffic rather than being seen themselves, a receive-only unit covers that need without the cost or complexity of a full transceiver.
