Class A transceivers transmit more often and at higher power, and are built to the standard required for larger commercial vessels, while Class B suits most leisure boats and reports position less frequently to share VHF bandwidth with other traffic. Both need a valid MMSI programmed in before they will transmit, so factor that registration step into fitting rather than leaving it until after installation.
A transceiver needs its own VHF antenna or a splitter shared with an existing radio antenna, and a shared splitter adds a point of failure worth weighing against the cost of a second dedicated antenna. Silent mode, where fitted, stops the unit transmitting your own position while still receiving other traffic, worth knowing how to use before you actually need it.
Output to a chartplotter is usually via NMEA 2000 or NMEA 0183, so check which your display expects before wiring it in.
