Choosing how to command the pilot
A dedicated keypad controller gives immediate, tactile control at the primary helm, useful where quick course adjustments matter and screen space on the MFD is limited. A wireless SmartController extends that same control to the cockpit, flybridge or foredeck without running a cable, which suits boats where the skipper needs to move around while under autopilot, though it relies on its own battery and periodic charging rather than ship's power. Some Raymarine systems can also be commanded directly from the MFD touchscreen, which removes the need for a separate controller altogether on a simpler setup.
Whichever route you choose, the controller talks to the autopilot's course computer, the ACU, rather than to the drive unit directly, so check that your existing computer supports the controller you are adding. Older SeaTalk-based systems are not always compatible with current SeaTalkng controllers without a converter.
