Choosing the right cable for the run

SeaTalkng cable forms the backbone for Raymarine's instrument and network devices, with spur cables dropping off to individual units in the same way as a standard NMEA 2000 installation; getting backbone length and spur count right avoids the intermittent faults that come from an overloaded or poorly terminated network. Power cable is a separate matter, sized to the current draw of the device at the end of the run rather than to the data cable alongside it.

Where a run needs to be longer than a standard cable length, joining sections with the correct connector type is preferable to cutting and re-terminating a cable not designed for field termination, particularly for anything carrying power.

Route cable runs away from other bunched wiring where possible, especially near VHF or radar cabling, to avoid interference on the network. If you are planning a longer run than usual, check the maximum backbone length for your system before ordering lengths.
