Fixed versus thermal: choosing the right camera
A fixed camera gives a clear, high-resolution picture in daylight and reasonable ambient light, useful for docking, checking the cockpit or watching an anchor from the saloon. A thermal camera reads heat rather than light, so it keeps working in complete darkness, fog or haze where a fixed lens shows nothing useful, which matters more for night passage-making or spotting other vessels and debris than for routine dockside checks. Many boats run both, since they solve different problems rather than one simply outperforming the other in every condition.
Raymarine cameras feed into an MFD over RayNet or, on some models, directly over Ethernet, and viewing more than one camera on the same display usually needs a compatible switch. Check the mounting position for a thermal unit in particular, since exhaust outlets, engine covers and other warm surfaces nearby can affect what the image actually shows.
