Choosing the right depth transducer
The main decision with a depth transducer is transom mount, thru hull, or in hull, and that choice is driven mostly by hull material and shape rather than preference. Thru hull transducers generally give the most consistent reading since they sit in clean water below the turbulence line, but they need a hull with enough deadrise and depth to mount correctly, and installation means a hole below the waterline. Transom mounts are simpler to fit and easier to service but can lose the signal at speed or in a following sea if positioned where the hull creates turbulence.
In hull transducers, glued to the inside of a solid GRP hull with no hole at all, trade a small amount of signal strength for a fit and forget installation, and suit boats where hull access below the waterline is difficult. CHIRP transducers cover a range of frequencies rather than one fixed frequency, which generally gives better target definition, but the transducer still needs to support CHIRP for the connected sounder to use it.
