What a fixed VHF needs to talk to

A fixed VHF earns its keep through what it connects to rather than through transmit power alone, which is capped at 25 watts on all sets regardless of brand. GPS position, taken over NMEA 2000 or 0183 from the boat's chartplotter or a dedicated antenna, is what makes a DSC distress call useful, since it lets the coastguard see your exact position rather than just receiving an alert. Built-in AIS receive functions on some Raymarine sets let you see nearby traffic on the radio's own screen without a separate AIS unit, which suits a smaller boat with limited helm space.

A wired remote handset is worth considering on a flybridge or larger cruiser where a second station is needed, since it shares the same MMSI and DSC settings as the main unit rather than requiring a duplicate radio. Confirm your MMSI is programmed correctly before first use, as most sets only allow this to be set once.
