When an external GPS antenna is worth adding

A chartplotter's internal GPS is usually adequate at an open helm, but it can struggle for a fast, stable fix below a hardtop, inside a flybridge enclosure, or anywhere with a lot of metal or carbon overhead shielding the sky view; an external antenna mounted with clear sky visibility solves that reliably. GNSS antennas that track multiple satellite constellations rather than GPS alone generally acquire and hold a fix faster, which matters most in poor conditions or close manoeuvring.

Output is usually NMEA 2000 or NMEA 0183 depending on the antenna and the network it is joining, so check which your existing backbone runs before ordering. Cable run length between antenna and network also needs to stay within the antenna's rated maximum, particularly on a longer mast or flybridge run.

Mounting position should keep the antenna clear of radar and other transmitting antennas to avoid interference affecting the fix.
