Choosing an open array size
Open array length is chosen against beam width and range rather than boat size alone: a longer array produces a narrower horizontal beam, which separates two close targets more clearly and extends usable range, so a boat that runs longer offshore passages generally benefits from a bigger array than one used mainly for coastal day trips. Available mast or arch space and the pedestal's weight rating both need checking before settling on a size, since a longer array is also heavier and creates more windage aloft.
Power output and antenna length work together rather than separately, so a shorter array with high power will still fall short of a longer array's target separation in clutter such as rain or sea return. Mounting height should stay clear of other antennas and any satellite dome to avoid interference, and the scanner cable run needs to be sized correctly to avoid signal loss over longer mast heights.
