Planning a SeaTalkng backbone
A SeaTalkng network is built around a single backbone run with spurs branching off to individual devices, and getting the backbone length and termination right matters more than most installers expect. Both ends of the backbone need a terminator fitted, and a T piece is required at each point a spur joins the main run rather than daisy chaining spurs directly.
Backbone cable comes in fixed lengths, so plan the route around the boat before buying rather than piecing together odd lengths afterwards, and remember that total backbone length has a practical limit beyond which signal quality suffers. Power for the network is injected at one point on the backbone using a dedicated power cable, sized to the number of devices drawing current from it.
Because SeaTalkng uses NMEA 2000 wiring underneath Raymarine's own connectors, an Actisense or similar adaptor lets you bring in devices from other brands without rewiring the whole network.
