Fixed or pan and tilt thermal imaging
A fixed thermal camera gives a set forward view and suits close-quarters work such as spotting an obstacle or another vessel in poor light, while a pan and tilt model can be slewed to follow a target or scan an arc, which suits open water passage making at night. Resolution and lens angle both affect how far a useful image reaches, and a narrower lens generally sees further but covers less width.
Mounting height and a clear, unobstructed view forward matter more than raw camera spec, since a camera mounted too low or behind rigging will underperform regardless of resolution. These units connect over Ethernet to a compatible Axiom or LightHouse-based display, so check your MFD's video input and network ports before ordering.
Power draw is modest but continuous, so include the camera when totting up 12V or 24V loads on a system already running other electronics.
