Sizing a tiller pilot to the boat
Tiller pilots are rated by boat displacement and, to a lesser extent, sail area, since the ram inside has to push against genuine helm loads in a breeze rather than just hold a straight course in calm water; undersizing one for a heavier boat shows up as hunting or straining in anything more than moderate conditions. The connection between pin and tiller arm also needs enough travel and a solid enough tiller to take the loads without flexing.
Power draw is modest compared with a below-decks drive, but it still needs a reasonably direct supply rather than the end of a long, thin cable run, since voltage drop under load is a common cause of a tiller pilot underperforming its rating.
SeaTalk or NMEA 2000 connection lets the pilot take wind angle from onboard instruments for wind-vane style steering rather than compass course alone, which is worth wiring in from the outset if the boat already carries an instrument system.
