Horizontal or vertical: picking a gland

The choice between a horizontal and vertical entry gland usually comes down to available panel space rather than personal preference. A horizontal-entry gland routes the cable in from the side, which suits a tight bulkhead or a panel with no room above the entry point, while a vertical gland routes the cable straight through and often sits lower in profile on an open deck.

Both need the insert matched to the cable's outside diameter; too loose a fit will not seal properly under Scanstrut's IPX6 rating, and too tight a fit can pinch the cable jacket during installation. Where several cables need to pass through the same panel, a multi-cable gland is usually a tidier and more watertight solution than fitting several single glands side by side.

Check the panel or bulkhead thickness against the gland's rated range before drilling, since some models are only rated for a specific thickness window.
