Simrad's 4G and 5G broadband radar systems use continuous transmission rather than the pulsed output of a traditional magnetron scanner, which gives near-instant warm-up, very low emitted power at close range, and strong short-range target and clutter discrimination, useful for spotting other small craft, buoys or debris close to the boat in an anchorage or narrow channel.
Where these systems trade away performance is at longer range, where a magnetron or pulse compression open array generally still out-ranges a broadband dome on raw distance, so the choice depends on whether most of your radar use is close-quarters and coastal or genuinely long-range offshore work.
Fitting one is straightforward on a boat already wired for a Simrad radome, sharing the same mount pattern and network connection, and data reaches the display over the same Simrad or Navico Ethernet backbone as other radar options in the range, so check your existing cable and network type before ordering a direct replacement.
