Where a camera earns its place on board
Fixed cameras cover the practical blind spots, engine bay, cockpit, mast base, or astern for reversing, and integrate over the network so the feed appears directly on a compatible Simrad display rather than needing a separate monitor. Thermal cameras add a different capability again, picking out other vessels, navigation marks and people in the water in low light or darkness well before a conventional camera or the naked eye would.
Camera feeds typically run over NMEA 2000 for control alongside a network video connection for the image itself, so cable routing needs to account for both rather than treating the camera as a simple video device.
Mounting height and angle matter more for a thermal unit than a standard camera, since a mast-head or elevated position gives a wider effective range for spotting contacts than a low, hull-level mount would.
