DSC, MMSI and what your VHF needs to work
A fixed VHF is only fully functional once it is programmed with your vessel's MMSI number, without which DSC distress and routine calling will not work correctly. Class D DSC monitors channel 70 continuously for digital calls while you use the radio normally on another channel, which is the main advantage over older sets that could only do one or the other.
Several models in this range include a built-in AIS receiver, showing nearby vessel targets directly on the radio's own screen without needing a separate AIS unit, though this only receives, it does not transmit your own position. Antenna choice and cable run affect transmit range more than the radio itself, so a quality masthead antenna and low-loss coax are worth as much attention as the set.
Handset or wired remote options let you fit a second control station at a flybridge or aft cockpit without duplicating the whole radio; check which models in the range support this before planning a second station.
