Do you need an external GPS antenna
Most modern chartplotters have an internal GPS receiver adequate for typical helm mounting, so an external antenna is mainly worth adding where the internal signal struggles, below a hardtop, inside a wheelhouse with significant metal overhead, or on a flybridge where cable runs from a lower helm unit leave the display without a clear view of the sky of its own.
An external antenna generally gives a faster fix on power-up and steadier tracking at speed, since it sits with a clear view of the sky rather than behind glass or under cover, and multi-constellation models tracking GPS alongside GLONASS or Galileo can improve fix reliability in marginal conditions such as a marina surrounded by tall moorings.
Connection is usually a simple NMEA 2000 or proprietary data cable back to the display, so check which protocol your Simrad unit expects before ordering, and mount the antenna as high and as clear of large metal structures, radar scanners and other antennas as the installation allows, since interference from nearby transmitting equipment can degrade the fix.
