Connector types and cable length limits

Navico-family displays and radar, across Simrad, B&G and Lowrance, use a proprietary 5-pin Ethernet connector for high-bandwidth data such as radar, sonar and chart imagery, which is a different physical connector to the standard NMEA 2000 backbone carrying instrument data. The two networks run in parallel rather than sharing cable, so a system with an Ethernet-connected radar or sonar module still needs a separate NMEA 2000 drop for basic instrument data.

Cable length affects signal reliability more on Ethernet runs than on standard NMEA 2000, and longer runs between a helm display and a transom-mounted radar or sonar module may need a switch or expander to maintain bandwidth over distance. Check how many Ethernet ports your display actually has before adding radar, a second sonar module and a camera to the same network, since entry-level units often have fewer ports than the system you end up wanting to build.
