When you still need NMEA 0183

NMEA 0183 remains common on older instruments, some AIS receivers and certain radios, so a boat with a mix of old and new electronics often still needs 0183 cabling somewhere on board even if the primary network has moved to NMEA 2000. Wiring polarity matters on 0183, unlike the twisted-pair, polarity-tolerant connections used on NMEA 2000, so check the transmit and receive pairs are connected the right way round.

Baud rate is another point worth checking, since standard 0183 runs at a lower rate than the high-speed variant some AIS units use, and mismatched rates give no data or garbled sentences rather than an obvious error. Where an older 0183 device needs to talk to a current NMEA 2000 network, a converter is usually more practical than trying to run both protocols in parallel.
