Planning a NMEA 2000 backbone

A NMEA 2000 network is built from a backbone cable with short drop cables branching off to each device, rather than devices daisy-chained directly to one another, and Simrad's range covers the backbone, T-connectors, terminators and power taps needed to build one from scratch. Both ends of the backbone need a terminator, and a network that will not power up correctly, or shows devices missing intermittently, often turns out to be missing one end or have a loose T-connector rather than a faulty display.

Total network length and the number of devices both affect load; every device draws a small current from the network, described as its Load Equivalency Number, and a large network may need its own dedicated power tap positioned centrally rather than at one end, to avoid voltage drop reaching devices furthest from the supply. Plan drop cable lengths generously when installing rather than pulling them taut, since instruments are sometimes moved during fit-out.
