Why array length affects performance

An open array earns its keep mainly on longer passages and in busy shipping lanes, where a narrower beam width resolves separate targets at range more clearly than a radome can manage. Simrad's open-array scanners connect to a compatible MFD over Ethernet rather than the NMEA 2000 backbone used for simpler instrument data, since the radar picture itself needs far more bandwidth than a typical sensor feed.

Array length affects beam width and therefore target separation at range, so a longer array generally resolves detail better, at the cost of more mounting space and swing clearance needed around it. Mounting height above the waterline also matters for range, particularly in a seaway where wave clutter can mask smaller targets close in. Power draw is higher than a radome, so check the scanner's current draw against your DC distribution before adding one to an existing electrical system.
