An enclosed radome trades the range and target separation of an open array for a compact, low-windage housing that suits a mast-mounted position on a sailing boat or a smaller powerboat without the deck space or pedestal strength for an open array. Dome diameter affects beam width and therefore how well it separates two close targets, so a larger radome within the range still improves definition even though the housing stays enclosed.
Mounting height clear of other rigging and antennas improves both range and the accuracy of nearby target detection, since radar performance is affected by obstructions in its immediate sweep more than by mast height alone.
Power and data typically run over Ethernet back to the network alongside NMEA 2000 for range and gain control from the display, so cable routing at the mast base is worth planning before the radome goes up.
