Why a paddlewheel log needs calibrating

A speed sensor reads how fast the boat is moving through the water, which is a different figure from GPS speed over ground, and the two will diverge in any current or tide. Most Simrad speed sensors use a small paddlewheel that can foul with growth or debris over a season, so a speed reading that drifts low over time is usually a fouled paddlewheel rather than a faulty sensor. Calibrating the sensor against a known GPS speed on a still day corrects for hull-specific flow effects and is worth repeating after antifouling or hull work.

Output feeds the network over NMEA 2000 alongside GPS, wind and depth data, so a true wind calculation on a sailing instrument display depends on an accurate speed-through-water figure as much as it does on the wind sensor itself. A through-hull fitting for the sensor should be positioned away from the bow wave and any turbulence from fittings ahead of it.
